In Memory of Mr. Steve Nedzel
Mr. Steve Nedzel died June 17, 2011 from injuries sustained from a fall at his home. He was the Music Department Chair and Director of Bands at Lincoln-Way West, and played a key role in preparing for the opening of West in August of 2009, including choosing the music and writing the lyrics of the West fight song as well as designing the marching band uniforms. Prior to the opening of West, he was the Assistant Director of Bands at L-W Central for eight years.
Mr. Nedzel grew up in the northwest suburbs of Chicago in Palatine and attended Fremd High School. He received his Bachelors of Music Education degree from the Univ. of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. During his time there, he performed in a number of different ensembles including the Symphonic Bands, Marching Illini, and saxophone quartets. He completed his Masters of Music Education degree from VanderCook College of Music in 2005 and his Masters of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University in 2009. Mr. Nedzel’s primary instrument was the saxophone, and he was a member of the Northshore Concert Band in Evanston. He was a passionate fan of the Cubs and the Illini and enjoyed living and spending time in the city of Chicago. His dedication to his students and music will long be remembered. During the first year of Lincoln-Way West, he took a marching band of 36 freshman, sophomores and juniors and created an award-winning program. The excellence continued the second year, and the foundation was laid for years to come.
